BERNADETH PAR, AUDIT
What did you want to be when you were younger?
When I was younger, I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and become a licensed Civil Engineer.
What made you choose your current profession?
In my penultimate year of secondary school, I took introductory drafting and engineering subjects and realised they weren’t the right fit for me. When I started considering university options, a relative suggested accountancy (which was the first time I’d heard of the course). I didn’t know much about it at the time but I understood it involved mathematics – something I genuinely enjoyed – so I chose to study for a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy at the University of the East in Manila.
After graduating, I took the licensure exams and qualified as a Certified Public Accountant. From there, I pursued roles in business and finance, and ultimately chose to build my career in audit.
Why did you choose to work for Grant Thornton?
After gaining strong experience in a Big 4 firm in the Philippines, I wanted to challenge myself by working outside my comfort zone, and overseas. When a vacancy became available at Grant Thornton CI, it felt like the right next step. I also spoke to colleagues who had been seconded to Jersey and Guernsey and did my own research on the Channel Islands and Grant Thornton. What stood out most to me were the firm’s values – they really resonate with who I am and how I work.
The recruitment process was seamless and everyone was supportive throughout – from my relocation to Guernsey, settling into the island, and into the workplace. That support has continued as I’ve progressed in my career with the firm.
How has Grant Thornton helped you grow professionally?
I joined Grant Thornton as an Audit Senior in 2019 and I’m now an Audit Senior Manager. The firm has given me the opportunity, support and trust to grow and prepare for even greater responsibilities. From early in my career our leadership team encouraged me to step up, which helped me learn more about myself and develop my own approach to different areas of work. I’ve also been given opportunities to showcase and strengthen my skills, not only working directly with clients but also supporting and managing teams, alongside the right guidance from my managers, directors and partners.
What do you most like about working at Grant Thornton?
The people.
I’m proud to say that Grant Thornton and our leaders genuinely value people. We’re given opportunities to grow, and we’re consistently supported throughout our journey. Everyone is helpful and willing to go above and beyond for the team. No matter your role or department, you can always find someone to guide you – and they’ll be cheering you on as you develop professionally. Grant Thornton really does feel like a family and a home away from home.
