What did you want to be when you were younger?
I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to do when I was younger but I initially imagined a career connected to sport. Surfing was my main interest, and after spending several seasons at Guernsey Surf School and completing my lifeguard qualification, I had considered becoming a surf instructor. However, while completing my A-levels I studied Business Studies, which included a module on the human resources function. I found it genuinely interesting, and it sparked an interest in HR as a potential career path – one that my parents were definitely much happier about!
What made you choose your current profession?
I wanted a role that was varied, with no two days being the same and where I could clearly see the value in the work I was doing. A role in our People & Culture team appealed to me because it is involved in so many different aspects of the employee lifecycle; from recruitment and onboarding, through development, wellbeing, and performance. That variety, combined with the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s experience at work, is what drew me to the profession.
Why did you choose to work for Grant Thornton?
I wanted to work at Grant Thornton because of its reputation as a people-focussed organisation. The firm is known for genuinely caring about its employees, which made it an attractive and supportive place to start, and develop, my career. It also helped that everyone I spoke to before applying for a role told me they had heard it was a great place to work for!
How has Grant Thornton helped you grow professionally?
Grant Thornton gave me a rare opportunity to start my career in an entry-level People & Culture role, which was not common at the time. From the outset, the firm supported my development, including funding and encouraging me to complete my CIPD Level 3 Certificate and Level 5 Diploma. Alongside my professional studies, I continue to work alongside a highly skilled and supportive People & Culture team and to learn from their experience. I am also given exposure to a wide variety of work, which enables me to build my skills and grow in confidence. Through my career at Grant Thornton, I have been able to progress into a People & Culture Manager role.
What do you most like about working at Grant Thornton?
The people I work with and the variety of work I’m involved in are what I enjoy most. I work alongside a supportive and skilled team, and no two days are the same in People & Culture which keeps the role interesting, challenging, and rewarding. The firm has a positive, supportive, and flexible culture, which makes it a great environment to work in and supports a healthy balance alongside delivering high-quality work.
