LUCINDA OVERBURY , TAX
What did you want to be when you were younger?
When I was younger I wanted to be a teacher. I liked explaining things and helping people build confidence. Looking back, I still get the same satisfaction when guiding clients and supporting junior members of my team.
What made you choose your current profession?
University wasn’t the right fit for me so I came back to Jersey and looked for a career that matched the way I think, which is logical and built around solving problems. I started as a bookkeeper, trained as an accountant, and then found my niche specialising in tax.
Why did you choose to work for Grant Thornton?
I chose Grant Thornton because of its strong reputation in the market, the opportunity to work on more complex and challenging work, and the clear room to grow and develop my career.
How has Grant Thornton helped you grow professionally?
I joined Grant Thornton seven years ago as a newly qualified accountant. Since then, I’ve been able to increase my technical knowledge in tax through on the job support and formal training, and I’ve taken on more responsibility managing people and advising clients directly. The firm has also pushed me to grow in confidence, moving from doing the work to leading conversations and helping shape solutions, both internally and externally.
What do you most like about working at Grant Thornton?
It’s the team and the culture.
People are genuinely supportive. If you’re stuck, someone will always make time to talk it through, which I feel really reflects our values. There is a real sense that we succeed as a team, as well as individuals.
