MUSTAPHA MARTINS, AUDIT

What is your background?
I was born in Nigeria, where I obtained a First-Class Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from Caleb University. I later moved to the UK to further my studies, completing a Master’s degree in Finance and Investment Banking with Distinction. My interest in audit was sparked a few years ago when I attended a seminar where the speaker highlighted how auditors, through their work, gain deep insights across various industries. They were described as ‘the police of the accounting profession’, ensuring accuracy and integrity in financial reporting. This perspective strongly resonated with me and inspired my passion for pursuing a career in audit.

Why did you choose to work for Grant Thornton?
Grant Thornton is a top 7 firm in the UK, offering a diverse range of professional services. During my application process, I learned about the firm’s strong corporate culture through conversations with both current and former employees, which further reinforced my interest in joining. Additionally, the firm’s values strongly align with my own personal values, making it an organisation I can genuinely see myself thriving in. The opportunity to learn and develop within a fast-growing and diverse firm was a key motivating factor in my decision to join.

What is your role and what do you like about your position?
I am a Senior Associate in the Audit department, where I take ownership of smaller engagements while also contributing meaningfully to larger, more complex assignments across a diverse portfolio of clients. This balance allows me to develop a strong sense of ownership, reinforces the value I bring to each team, and supports my professional growth. I particularly value the supportive environment within my team, where more experienced colleagues are intentional about mentoring and are always willing to provide guidance. In addition, my role gives me the opportunity to assist new associates, helping them build their skills and develop professionally.

Why do you like working at Grant Thornton?
I enjoy working at Grant Thornton because of its positive and inclusive working culture, where open communication is encouraged.

One of the aspects I value most is the diversity within the workforce, which provides a great opportunity to learn from different perspectives, understand varied approaches to work, and gain exposure to a wide range of cultures. Overall, it is a genuinely enjoyable and supportive place to work.
