SAMUEL WATTS, AUDIT
What is your background?
I graduated from university in 2016 with an MSc in Forensic Psychology and took on a range of part-time jobs while travelling in New Zealand, Australia and Canada in between. When I returned, I settled on a career change and decided to pursue a career in financial services, specifically accounting.
Why did you choose to work for Grant Thornton?
Grant Thornton were mentioned to me by a recruitment agency while I was looking for jobs, and I knew that they were a big name in the industry, and after researching a bit more I could see that they were a company that valued watching people grow in the business by helping them pursue their qualification and offering excellent training in order to help them advance through the company, while also giving you the opportunity to develop relationships with the clients you work with.
What is your role and what do you like about your position?
As a senior associate, I work with associates, seniors and managers to complete audit engagements for entities across a range of industries. I am enjoying working across these different industries and gaining an insight into them, and it is rewarding to work on engagements from the planning phase right the way through to when the client signs their financial statements, as I learn a lot along the way.
Why do you like working at Grant Thornton?
It was a big step for me to leave the UK and relocate to Guernsey, but I knew I’d made the right decision when I arrived, it’s very easy to settle in when everyone in the office is friendly and happy to help and answer any questions. It is a very social office and there are plenty of opportunities and events outside of work to engage with, and the opportunity to grow within the business while I study for the ACCA qualification is also something I’m enjoying.
