EMBLA GJORVA, AUDIT
What is your background?
I was born and raised in Bergen, a coastal city in Norway that in many ways reminds me of Guernsey. At 18, I moved to South Korea to complete my bachelor’s degree in Science & Technology Policy, graduating with first-class honours. After that, I moved to London to pursue a master’s degree in Science, Technology and Society at UCL, where I achieved a distinction. Following university, I started a graduate role in hedge fund recruitment. While the role wasn’t the right fit for me, the exposure it gave me to the finance industry made me realise that this was the direction I wanted to pursue – particularly in a more technical, back‑office capacity.
Why did you choose to work for Grant Thornton?
I met my partner, who is originally from Guernsey, while living in London. That led me to consider building a career in Guernsey as well. When I came across the role at Grant Thornton, it immediately stood out as something well‑suited to my interests and the firm seemed to be the type of environment I enjoy working in.
I was already aware of Grant Thornton’s strong reputation as a large, global accounting and advisory firm, and I felt this was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss. Although I had interviewed with a few other firms, the interview process at Grant Thornton, along with the communication from the HR team, made it clear that this would be the ideal place for me. I felt confident accepting the offer without hesitation.
What is your role and what do you like about your position?
I work as an Associate in the audit department. There are several aspects of the role that I really enjoy. I love learning new things, and this position gives me the chance to do that constantly – both through studying for the ACA qualification and through hands‑on experience.
I have appreciated the early exposure to a wide variety of tasks, as well as the balance between independence in my work and the guidance provided, so I never feel thrown in at the deep end. Everyone is friendly and supportive, and I enjoy being able to work on different engagements and collaborate with a variety of people.
Why do you like working at Grant Thornton ?
The people are very friendly and always willing to help.
Everyone understands that new associates need guidance, and they’re quick to offer support whenever it’s needed. I also value the work‑life balance at Grant Thornton – it makes a big difference.
There are frequent events and activities to get involved in, which helps create a sense of community. On top of that, the office is centrally located and the workspace itself is lovely, which is definitely a bonus!
