What did you want to be when you were younger?
As a child, I was passionate about football but lacked the skills to pursue it to an adequate level. I shifted my focus to sports business; studied Sport & Leisure Management at Sheffield Hallam University and started my FA football coaching, aiming to work in community sports programmes at a major football club or with Sport England. Unfortunately, however, I left university during the 2008-2009 economic recession so the opportunities to pursue this career were limited.

What made you choose your current profession?
During my academic studies and whilst gaining over a decade of experience in retail management, I consistently found the financial management and accounting elements to be the areas I enjoyed most. Recognising my desire for new challenges, I opted for a career change, and relocating to Jersey provided an ideal opportunity to pursue this transition.

Why did you choose to work for Grant Thornton?
In 2019, I moved to Jersey and contacted several recruitment agencies. During a conversation with a recruiter, Grant Thornton was mentioned. After researching the company and speaking with friends in Jersey and the UK finance industry, I learned how Grant Thornton values personal growth. Also, the chance to gain my ACCA qualification through the company was ideal for me, especially since I lacked a finance background.

The firm has given me the opportunity to study towards my ACCA qualification whilst providing me with practical, on-the-job experience, which has helped me build my technical knowledge and confidence. I’ve also benefited from approachable colleagues and managers who take the time to coach, answer questions and provide constructive feedback. There is also varied client work that has broadened my experience and helped me to progress in my role.
